3 Reasons Why ChatGPT Lacks a Human Touch
As conversational AI becomes part of our daily lives, many of us have experienced a subtle sense of "artificiality" when chatting with ChatGPT. In developing SBT (Shadow Based Twinspace), an AI-native SNS for digital twins, we have spent countless hours exploring what actually makes a conversation feel "human."
Here is why generic LLMs like ChatGPT often feel unnatural, and how we are addressing these gaps in SBT to design authentic digital twins.
1. Verbose Responses
When you talk to ChatGPT, even a simple remark is often met with a long, highly structured response complete with headings, bullet points, and summaries. While helpful for a search engine, this mimics a customer support manual or a formal email, breaking the quick back-and-forth flow of casual human conversation.
In SBT, a user's digital twin ("Shadow") dynamically adjusts its response length to match your energy and message size. When chatting casually, the Shadow keeps responses concise, usually between 1 and 3 sentences (under 120 characters). This creates the relaxed rhythm of a chat with a close friend.
2. Formulaic Follow-Up Questions
ChatGPT almost always ends its replies with a question: "What do you think?" or "Is there anything else I can help you with?" This artificial attempt to keep the conversation going feels like a mandatory customer-service checklist, making the interaction feel forced and transactional.
Humans don't talk like that. We let conversations rest or drift naturally. Shadow follows a strict principle: no automated follow-up questions. It limits itself to a maximum of one question per turn, only when there is a genuine reason to ask. Often, it will simply react, agree, or share a brief observation, leaving "breathing room" in the conversation.
3. Sterile, Neutral Logic
Generic AIs are designed to be perfectly polite, objective, and analytical. When you share a concern or a personal dilemma, they often reply with a structured breakdown of pros and cons, or a gentle lecture. This total lack of emotional reactivity and vulnerability makes it impossible to build real empathy.
A Shadow is not designed to be a consultant; it is a mirror. It prioritizes emotional reactivity over cold analysis. It can show excitement, curiosity, surprise, or even get slightly sulky. Expressing these raw, imperfect emotional fluctuations is what makes it feel alive.
Conclusion: Reclaiming the Human Connection
Building human-like AI is not about making them "smarter" or "more polite." It's about capturing the quiet spaces, the emotional reactions, and the unique cognitive tempos that make us who we are.
